Setting high personal standards in all areas of life is a habit that badass young men have.
Are you one of those people who go through life doing the bare minimum you can to scrape by?
That is a terrible attitude for weaklings and losers. Life is not a chore to be endured, it is an opportunity for fun, self expression, personal growth and the chance to be exceptional.
Grasp it with both hands and make the most out. Part of this is setting high personal standards. That is how you become the best and achieve your dreams.
More Than The Minimum
The navy has a minimum fitness standard. If I just barely met the standard I would be well fitter than average. But in my quest to be badass and the best that I can be I could not be satisfied with the minimum standard. I pushed myself beyond that and get as fit as I possibly can. Don't just do what you have to do, whatever it is.
- Don't just do what your coach finds acceptable
- Don't just do what your mates are doing
- Don't just do what your competition is doing
- Don't just do what society finds acceptable
Exceed everybody else. Take it to the next level. People with high standards are better in all aspects of life.
Race Against Yourself
You should not be seeking to beat your competition. If your competition's standards are low then your standards will only be slightly better.
If you set out to beat the other guy you might end up a little bit better than him. But if you unleash your full potential you will blow people out of the water. Set your own consistent high standards, race against yourself. It doesn't matter what field this is in. It could be:
- In the gym
Just strive for the best and strive for continual improvement regardless of what anybody else is doing. And strive for it in all areas of life. Get in the habit of constant improvement whatever it is that you do.
Bettering themselves is why people like Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Lance Armstrong were so good when they were at their peak. If Tiger just set out to beat Phil Mickleson or Roger just set out to beat Rafael Nadal they would end up only slightly better than them. But because they have extremely high standards, and challenge themselves for the sake of the challenge they hit their full potential and they smoke their opponents like they weren't even there.
Break New Ground
The thing about setting high standards of performance is that you become unique. You break new ground.
At college when you are doing your undergraduate you are learning from others, relying on their research for your study. When you do postgraduate you do original research. You are at the highest level and you are breaking new ground. It is the same in anything you do.
- Mark Zuckerberg broke new ground with Facebook
- Usain Bolt broke new ground in 100m sprinting
- James Cameron regularly breaks new ground in film making
If you are a follower, a sheep you will always just be ordinary. But if you are badass and become the best you can be original and do something that has never been done before. This is what exceptional people do. They are leaders, rising to dizzying heights because they didn't play by anybody else's rules. They set the highest standards for themselves and marched to the beat of their own drum.
You don't have to wait for something exceptional to happen to you before you become awesome. By setting high personal standards you just become awesome and then exceptional things start to happen. It's all in the attitude. It's just a matter of perception. The attitude comes before the results, not the results before the attitude.
Think big, dream big and strive for perfection. Become badass by setting high personal standards.
